On iPhone and Android, deleting a photo doesn't erase it straight away. It moves to Recently Deleted on iPhone, or to a bin on Android, and stays there for 30 days in Apple's, Google's and Samsung's apps. Until that bin is emptied, you can restore it and it still uses storage.
What happens when you delete a photo on iPhone?
It goes to the Recently Deleted album, not into thin air. Apple keeps it there for 30 days, then deletes it permanently. Until then you can put it back with a couple of taps.
If you use iCloud Photos, a delete on one device is a delete everywhere: the photo leaves your iPad, Mac and iCloud.com too, as long as they’re signed in with the same Apple Account. That’s also why deleting is how you free up iCloud storage when it’s full. With an iCloud Shared Library, anyone can delete a shared photo, but only the person who added it can recover it or delete it permanently.
Since iOS 16, Recently Deleted is locked. You open it with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode, so someone borrowing your phone can’t browse what you threw away.
How do I recover deleted photos on iPhone?
- Open Photos and find Recently Deleted under Utilities. On iOS 18 and later, swipe up from the library (on the latest versions it sits under Collections). On iOS 16 and 17, tap Albums, then swipe up.
- Tap View Album and open it with Face ID or Touch ID.
- Tap Select, choose the photos, tap the More button, then Recover. Or tap Recover All.
- Confirm. The photos return to your library.
If you’d rather skip the lock, go to Settings > Apps > Photos and turn off Use Face ID (on iOS 17 and earlier, Settings > Photos). The Hidden album then opens without a lock too.
What happens when you delete a photo on Android?
It depends on which app you delete it from. Android has no single deleted album. Each gallery keeps its own bin.
Google Photos moves the photo to its Bin for 30 days. Google’s help pages now give 30 days whether or not the photo was backed up, so treat older articles quoting 60 days with care. Deleting in Google Photos removes the copy on your phone as well, and if the photo is backed up, it’s deleted from every device with backup turned on. To restore, tap Collections > Bin, touch and hold the photo, then tap Restore.
Samsung Gallery has a Recycle bin that keeps photos for 30 days, but only if it was switched on before you deleted them. Check it at Gallery > Menu > Settings > Recycle bin. To restore, open Menu > Recycle bin, tap Edit, pick the photos and tap Restore.
Files by Google keeps deleted files in its own bin for 30 days on Android 11 and later. Restore them from Menu > Bin. Emptying these bins is often the quickest way to free up space on a Samsung or Pixel phone.
How do iPhone and Android compare?
| iPhone | Android | |

| How long they stay | 30 days | 30 days in each of those three apps |
| How to recover | Recently Deleted > Select > More > Recover | Open that app’s bin, select, tap Restore |
| How to free the space now | Recently Deleted > Select > More > Delete | Google Photos: Collections > Bin > More > Empty bin |
| Deleted on your other devices? | Yes, with iCloud Photos on | Yes, in Google Photos with backup on |
Why hasn’t my storage gone up after deleting photos?
Because the photos are still on the phone. A photo in Recently Deleted or a bin takes as much room as it did in your library. The space comes back after 30 days, or as soon as you empty the bin yourself.
On iPhone, open Recently Deleted, tap Select, choose what you’re sure about, then tap More > Delete. In Google Photos, tap Collections > Bin > More > Empty bin > Delete permanently. Either way, there’s no undo after that step.
Google’s bin can also fill up. If Google Photos offers to Delete permanently straight away, the bin is full, and you’ll need to empty it to keep the safety net. For more ways to win back room, see our guide to freeing up space on iPhone without losing the photos you love.
Is a deleted photo really gone?
Once the bin is emptied, neither Photos nor Google Photos can bring it back. That’s the point of emptying it.
Copies elsewhere are another matter. Google says deleting from Google Photos doesn’t automatically remove the same picture from Drive, Gmail, Blogger or YouTube, and that photos on a removable memory card may need deleting in your device’s gallery app. A photo you sent in a chat also lives on in that chat, which is why it’s worth blurring faces before you share a photo rather than after. If privacy is why you’re deleting, check those places too. Our privacy promise explains what Siftlo does on the phone and what can ever reach the cloud.
How does Siftlo handle deleting?
Siftlo never deletes on its own. You review a set, confirm once in Siftlo, and then your phone shows its own system dialog for each batch. Nothing goes without that second tap.
Where things go depends on what they are:
- Photos and videos from your library go to the phone’s own deleted album. On iPhone they sit in Recently Deleted for 30 days. On Android, the phone keeps them in its bin until it’s emptied.
- Files from folders you picked go to Siftlo’s Recovery for 14 days, and Siftlo shows the date they’ll be gone for good before you confirm.
Siftlo says queued to free rather than “freed”, because the space isn’t yours until the bin is emptied, and it offers a guided step to do that. Undo works differently on each phone. On Android, Siftlo can put library photos back itself. On iPhone, only Photos can restore from Recently Deleted, so Siftlo hands you into Photos with the exact items listed.
That safety net matters most when you clear in bulk, such as the near-copies and burst frames that pile up in a camera roll.
Questions people ask
Can I get a photo back after emptying Recently Deleted?
Not from the Photos app. Apple says that once you delete a photo from Recently Deleted, you can't get it back. Google says the same for its bin, and adds that Google Takeout can't recover permanently deleted items either.
Does deleting a photo in Google Photos delete it from my phone?
Yes. Google says deleting in the app removes both the Google Photos copy and the one on your device. To remove a photo from your phone only, open it, tap More, then Delete from device.
Why is the Delete button grey on some of my iPhone photos?
Photos copied onto the iPhone by syncing with a computer can't be deleted in the Photos app. Apple says you need to stop syncing photos from the computer first.
